His Life:   Abū Zakariyya Muḥyī al-Dīn Yaḥyá Ibn Sharaf al-Nawawī was born in 631 AH/1234 CE in Nawá, a village near Damascus, Syria. He was known for his simplistic living, especially in his food and clothing. He died in 676 AH/1278 CE of sickness in Nawá at the age of about 45, having never married.

His Studies:   After moving to Damascus, Imām al-Nawawī became serious about studying, specializing in fiqh and ḥadīth. He began writing at 30, and authored many works still relied upon today. His most notable books are his explanation of Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, his 40-ḥadīth collection, and Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn.

His Position(s):   However, (as Ibn al-'Uthaymīn mentions) he made mistakes in Allah's names and descriptions, changing the apparent meanings of them. It is hoped Allah will forgive him because he was a mujtahid and due to the vast good he offered Muslims as Allah says: Surely, good deeds remove bad deeds. [Hūd, 11:114].
